Since the presidential election of 2016, the one in which a political outsider by the name of Donald Trump came from seemingly out of nowhere to become the highest elected official in the land, the powers that be who thought they were in control have been on a mission that can be summed up in a single word.

Resistance.

Those who oppose the agenda of President Trump (and his supporters, for that matter) have made no secret about the fact they're looking to staunchly withstand anything and everything proffered by this commander in chief.

In fact, in 2017, shortly after Trump's inauguration, they initiated a national campaign called "Resistance Summer," seeking "to bring Americans together to resist the powers that are trying to rig the system against working families. Our work is inspired and influenced by 60 years of civil rights organizing and resistance. We're hiring organizers across the country to build the Democratic resistance."

Trump himself has taken notice, saying on Halloween 2018, "Their whole theme: Obstruct. Resist. What the hell do you get out of that?"

We have seen the resistance manifest in all kinds of ways, ranging from name-calling and harsh rhetoric to people getting shot because of their political viewpoint. Here are some high-profile examples since Trump won the presidency:

Pop star Madonna said in a march in Washington, D.C.: "I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House. But I know that this won't change anything."

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, was kicked out of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, merely because she works for President Trump.

A Julius Caesar play was reworked to have a Donald Trump look-alike getting repeatedly stabbed instead of Caesar.

Actor Robert De Niro had not-so pleasant words in his resistance of Trump, saying, "I'd like to punch him in the face," and then on national TV saying, "I'm going to say one thing: F*** Trump."

Stand-up comedian Kathy Griffin held up a bloody, severed head that was made to look like a decapitated version of Trump during a photoshoot. She now sells a line of merchandise all proclaiming "F*** Trump."

Aides and advisers to Trump have been investigated for alleged collusion with Russia, with some admitting to or being convicted of crimes as a result of a special counsel probe.

A supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders shot Republican Congressman Steve Scalise and four others on a Virginia baseball field, as the gunman was allegedly looking to kill his political opponents.

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., had a less-than-civil call to action to resisters: "If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. You push back on them. Tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere!"

Brett Kavanaugh, after being nominated by Trump for the U.S. Supreme Court, faced severe resistance with claims of attempted sexual assault by a woman who could not remember key details of the alleged incident.

Barack Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder said of Republicans, "When they go low, we kick 'em."

Twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton defended Democrat tactics of fierce resistance, saying: "You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about."

These are just a few of the well-known comments and incidents.

Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh  discussed the resistance to Trump, noting: "They call this the resistance, but this isn't resistance. We're so far beyond resistance now. These people are doing much more than resisting. They are literally turning the law upside down. They are ignoring the law when it applies to them. They are accusing people who have not broken the law of having broken the law and forcing those people to either cop pleas or defend themselves, and, in the process, go broke and lose their homes, destroy their families. All of this on no evidence that anything of the original charge that the election was tampered with and is therefore illegitimate, there's no evidence for it.

"It continues unabated. And as these people fail in every element that they try to get rid of Trump, what then happens? Trump becomes even worse. Trump is Hitler. Trump is no different than Mao Tse-tung. Trump is hideous. They keep throwing out these inane, insane, crazy allegations in their unstopping attempt, their never-ending attempt to create anti-Trump public opinion which will then facilitate them getting what they want, and that is him thrown out of office."

Now that everyone is well aware of the resistance, you might wonder about its source. After all, the viciousness is taking place at numerous levels across America and appears to be highly organized. And while there may be big-name politicians and plenty of money being spent to feed this vitriolic behavior, there is likely something else at work here you may not have realized.

There is an unseen player who is doing what he does best, resist. In fact, his name means "Resister."

The individual I'm referring to is none other than Satan the devil. Yes, the Hebrew word Satan actually means "an adversary, one who resists."

I realize most people in today's modern world don't think about this character as they carry on their everyday life, going to work, paying the bills and raising their family. But Satan is a very real individual, who is actually resisting and opposing all those who are trying to be obedient to God and His divine laws.

In case you're not familiar with the Bible, Satan was not always an enemy. In fact, Scripture says he was a cherub, which is an angel, and a perfect one at that.

As God says of him: "You were an anointed guardian cherub, for I had appointed you." (Ezekiel 28:14)

The very next line in Scripture indicates all was well with him until something foul was detected in his character.

"From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways until wickedness was found in you." (Ezekiel 28:15)

Chapter after chapter of the Bible describe what wickedness is, and it can be summed up in a word that virtually everyone is familiar with, but they're not quite sure what it means. And that word is "sin."

You can try this experiment for yourself, asking a variety of people what the definition of sin is. You'll most likely get a different answer from each individual. But there is one place in the Bible where the meaning of the word is clearly spelled out. That verse is in the New Testament, in 1 John 3:4. Here it is from two translations:

sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4 KJV)

sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4 CSB)

Simply put, when anyone breaks any law or instruction from God, that person is sinning, engaging in wickedness, iniquity or evil. It's as simple as that. Opposing God and doing what He says not to do is an act of RESISTANCE or rebellion against the Maker of everything.

Thus, Satan, the original resister, was perfectly fine in God's eyes until he resisted and engaged in thoughts and activities contrary to the laws of God. He became wicked by resisting and rebelling against God.

As Job explained, "The wicked are those who rebel against the light. They do not recognize its ways or stay on its paths." (Job 24:13 CSB)

And since "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5), the Bible makes it more than obvious that rebelling against the light (God) is wicked.

Satan has been leading a rebellion against God, convincing a large number angels to join him in his resistance.

"So the great dragon was thrown out — the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him." (Revelation 12:9 CSB)

The resister has been hard at work using all kinds of lies and deception to trick mankind, confusing people on virtually every issue, from the existence of God Himself to the ultimate destiny of human beings, which is to become part of God's own family, the children of God, to rule and reign with Him for eternity.

Satan has been resisting for thousands of years, and there's no indication he'll give up his rebellion and repent of his wickedness, even though a main message of Jesus is to love your enemies. Yes, we're told to love those who resist.

Perhaps what we're seeing in our physical world today in America is a picture of what God has dealt with for a very long time: the individuals He created are acting in a stiff-necked fashion resisting peace, law and order. We see lawlessness all around us, and even some groups are targeting law-enforcement agencies as somehow being oppressive, when the opposite is true. It's the ones who want to maintain law and order who are being attacked, in the same way God is the ultimate Lawman dealing with wicked opposition from those who don't wish to obey His instructions.

The apostle Paul reminded everyone: "So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God's command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves." (Romans 13:2 CSB)

We all need to realize the world as we know it is not going to last forever. There is a time coming soon that God will be fed up with humanity's resistance and rejection of His ways, and He will put an end it to it in a fashion that won't be pretty.

As one famous prophet predicted: "There will be a time of distress such as never has occurred since nations came into being until that time." (Daniel 12:1 CSB)

It might be wise if we ask ourselves if today's so-called "resistance movement" is a manifestation of what's taking place in the unseen realm. Is it a picture of the demonic resistance by the devil against God Himself, for perceived injustice of some kind?

If it is, then we should be careful to make sure we're always on God's side, and never resist our loving Creator.
