Unmarked buildings, quiet legal help for accused priests

July 31, 2019

image from storage.googleapis.com

Clouds hang over The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, also known as Assumption Grotto, in Detroit, Wednesday, May 8, 2019. In the years before the Rev. Eduard Perrone helped start Opus Bono Sacerdotii, he and Assumption Grotto took in at least two priests who had been accused of sexual misconduct at dioceses in other states - including one who later admitted to molesting as many as 50 children in the 1980s and ‘90s, according to court documents in Texas. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

DRYDEN, Mich. (AP) — The visiting priests arrived discreetly, day and night.

Stripped of their collars and cassocks, they went unnoticed in this tiny Midwestern town as they were escorted into a dingy warehouse across from an elementary school playground. Neighbors had no idea some of the dressed-down clergymen dining at local restaurants might have been accused sexual predators.

Full Coverage: The Reckoning

They had been brought to town by a small, nonprofit group called Opus Bono Sacerdotii. For nearly two decades, the group has operated out of a series of unmarked buildings in rural Michigan, providing money, shelter, transport, legal help and other support to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse across the country.

DID MUELLER LIE ABOUT WHY HE DIDN’T INDICT TRUMP?

July 28, 2019

Special counsel caught fibbing, walks back comments
Kelen McBreen | Infowars.com - JULY 24, 2019 Comments

Did Mueller Lie About Why He Didn't Indict Trump?

During Wednesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing, special counsel Robert Mueller was caught in a lie regarding what prevented him from indicting President Trump.

The issue in question is specifically regarding the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) decision in the Nixon, Watergate era that says a sitting president can’t be indicted.

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) asked Mueller, “The reason you did not indict Donald Trump… is because of the OLC decision. Is that correct?”

“That is correct,” Mueller confirmed.   Read More

The Pale Horse: Disease... Drug resistant Malaria spreading

July 28, 2019

Malaria parasites resistant to drugs are spreading rapidly across South East Asia amid 'terrifying prospect' they could reach Africa

Malaria parasites resistant to key drugs have spread rapidly in South East Asia

The parasites were first detected in Cambodia in 2008, and in less than ten years had spread to neighbouring countries. First-choice drugs were failing to treat almost half of patients sick with malaria in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, by 2017. The parasites have spread by evolving with acquired genetic features, suggesting they have enhanced fitness to survive, a report said. Malaria is one of the world's biggest killers, claiming the life of a child every two minutes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Most of these deaths occur in Africa, where 250,000 youngsters die from the disease every year. Experts said the findings raise the 'terrifying prospect' that drug resistance could spread to Africa, where most malaria cases and deaths occur.

Why Greece has got it all (and more!)

July 28, 2019
The stunning Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach on Zante
The stunning Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach on Zante

Greek holidays are the stuff of legend. No, really. How many other countries can offer thousand-year-old monuments, beaches of bleached white sand and pretty villages of sugar-cube houses with cornflower blue shutters?

And with its mix of beautiful mainland coastlines and pretty-as-a-picture islands you can simply pick one perfect escape or choose to hop between two or three.

In Crete you can enjoy amazing local produce and one of the healthiest diets in the world; think fresh fish, plenty of vegetables and rich olive oil washed down by local wines. In Rhodes you'll find a blend of ancient civilisations and dazzling turquoise bays while in Halkidiki on the mainland, forested mountains plunge down to meet sandy coves lapped by the Aegean Sea.    MORE

NASCAR driver Matt DiBenedetto lost almost 10 pounds during a single Cup Series race

July 26, 2019

image from pbs.twimg.comNASCAR drivers are incredibly active in their free time, whether it's Jimmie Johnson running marathons or Ryan Newman working on his farm as exercise.

They run half-marathons the same week as the Daytona 500, they take on 100-mile uphill bike races, they find time to golf during race weekends and they go for jogs hours before racing. And many pit crew members played football, among other sports, in college before joining NASCAR.

But whether or not NASCAR drivers are athletes based solely on their day jobs (versus their extracurricular activities) is always a popular topic, especially among those who aren't racing fans. It's just sitting in a car and driving, right?

Not exactly. And drivers regularly remind people why they're athletes, what kind of shape they need to be in to race and the toll a single race can take on their bodies.   MORE

Words That Used to Mean Something Completely Different

July 25, 2019

The English language is constantly changing. New words seem to be emerging on a daily basis and some existing words are getting new definitions.

The original meaning of many words has been long forgotten — until now. Best Life recently uncovered dozens of everyday words that once used to mean something completely different. The findings are rather amusing.

Based on Best Life's research, here are 11 words that once had completely different meanings than the ones we know today:

  1. Awful. This word is anything but complimentary, but years ago it was used as a form of praise, describing people and things as "worthy of awe."
  2. Flirt. Nowadays, we describe someone who is playful in a romantic way as a flirt. Or in a less flattering manner, we call a tease a flirt. However, in the 1500s the word had nothing to do with dating. It was used to describe a quick jerking motion.
  3. Cheater. The term that we use today to describe dishonesty was once used to describe royal officers who looked after the king's escheats, which was the land he acquired upon the death of someone without a legal heir. The meaning of the term changed to reflect the dubious ways in which the officers did their jobs.
  4. Naughty. It is easy to see where the original meaning of this term, which is used nowadays to describe someone who misbehaves, came from. Naught means zero and back in the day, people who had nothing, or naught, were naughty.
  5. Terrible. We use the word terrible to describe a person, thing, or event that is far from pleasant, but the original term was used to describe actual fits of terror.
  6. Bully. Calling someone a bully implies they are intentionally seeking to harm or intimidate someone, so it is strange to think the term was once used to call someone "sweetheart."
  7. Silly. The word silly was used to describe innocence, happiness, and even someone who is fortunate, but somehow over the years it picked up a negative connotation and is now used to refer to someone who acts foolishly or childishly.
  8. Dapper. What is the link between a stylish, well-groomed man and bravery? The word dapper. Originally derived from the German word tapfer which means "brave," the term dapper originally referred to someone as bold or daring. The meaning changed to refer to a stylish man.
  9. Fantastic. This term, which is used to refer to something as extraordinarily good, originally described something that existed in one's imagination.
  10. Girl. The word that is used to refer to a young female referred to any young person, regardless of gender, in the Middle Ages.
  11. Guy. We casually throw the term around to describe the male species, but hundreds of years ago the word was used in a completely different context — to describe someone who had a grotesque appearance.

Legal hemp, pot’s look-alike, creates confusion for police

The only way to distinguish hemp and marijuana is by measuring their THC and officers don’t have the testing technology to do so on the spot.   It’s an unanticipated hiccup for the rapidly growing hemp industry, which relies on interstate trucking to transport hemp from farms to processing labs.   The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration put out a request for information on private companies that might have the technology for field tests sensitive enough to distinguish between hemp and marijuana.  MORE

Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander thinks the MLB has changed the baseballs to generate more scoring.

He told ESPN that he “100 percent” thinks the league has juiced the balls, and points to the fact they’ve done it in the home run derby as proof the MLB knows how to do it. As pointed out by ESPN and Verlander, the MLB currently owns the company producing the balls for the league. (RELATED: Women Get Into Insane Brawl During Chicago Cubs Game In Viral Video)

Moon Over Chappaquiddick? How Press Let Landing Overshadow Kennedy

July 21, 2019

For Fast Company’s run-up to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the magazine's Charles Fishman dove into the contemporaneous coverage from July 1969, focusing on how the print media reporting on “liberal lion” Sen. Ted Kennedy driving off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island that killed his passenger was overshadowed by the moon landing the next day. But is that a proper excuse for the lack of intensity? “Lost to history: The convergence of the first Moon landing and Chappaquiddick -- Why don’t we remember it that way?”

Media watchdogs have their own explanation of why people don’t necessarily link Chappaquiddick with memories of the moon landing (liberal bias), but Fishman has some interesting research into how that extraordinary event may have affected initial coverage of Kennedy’s car crash and the resulting death by drowning of his companion, Mary Joe Kopechne.

[For more on Chappaquiddick, see 50 Years of Shame: How Journalists Protected Ted Kennedy After Chappaquiddick.]

Fishman didn’t address the possibility of ideological slant factoring into the relatively modest coverage of the Kennedy event, putting it down to a coincidence of timing, with the bigger news of the moon landing shoving aside the incident on Chappaquiddick:

Liberals= Hypocrites Bernie and the $15.00 Min Wage He won't pay himself

July 21, 2019

Campaign workers for Bernie Sanders have taken aim at one of the senator's key policies in his 2020 presidential run — raising the federal minimum wage.

image from d.newsweek.com

According to The Washington Post, some members of Sanders' campaign team have been lobbying to raise their wages so that they make the $15 hourly rate that the Vermont senator has frequently called for both on the campaign trail and in Washington D.C.

The Post obtained a draft of a letter that the campaign's union planned to send to Sanders' campaign manager Faiz Shakir which read in part that workers "cannot be expected to build the largest grassroots organizing program in American history while making poverty wages. Given our campaign's commitment to fighting for a living wage of at least $15.00 an hour, we believe it is only fair that the campaign would carry through this commitment to its own field team."

More at:The Washington Post

The letter states that field organizers are working at least 60 hours a week, which lowers the average per hour pay to $13 an hour.
