It has been 99 years since Theodore Roosevelt’s death, yet he still captures Americans’ imaginations as much as any public figure from that era. What is often lost in our memory of Roosevelt is that he was not only a cowboy, a soldier, and a statesman, but also an acclaimed historian. Indeed, his historical scholarship (some of which remains the standard work in its field) is central to his legacy as a statesman.

Roosevelt was only 23 in 1882, when he published his first work of history, The Naval War of 1812. Although the book was well received in its time (every ship in the Navy was required to keep at least one copy on board), it is far more valuable today as a manifesto for American naval power and a clarion call for the modernization of what Roosevelt saw as a woefully ill-equipped fleet.

Roosevelt credits the young United States Navy with achieving several important victories against the British at sea, but this happened despite and not because of the actions of the American politicians who set military policy in the years before the war. During the Quasi-War fought between the United States and France in the late 1790s, President John Adams had ordered the construction of six frigates and created the Department of the Navy to oversee their construction. However, under the succeeding administrations of Jefferson and Madison, those ships fell into disrepair, and naval construction lost the importance it had once had in Washington. One can read the particular indignation Roosevelt has for Jefferson and Madison in the opening chapters of The Naval War of 1812, as he castigates their strategy for prioritizing small gunboats designed for coastal defense over larger frigates, and how this left the United States vulnerable to the much larger and more dangerous Royal Navy. While Roosevelt admires the quality of America’s sailors a great deal, he repeats vigorously that they were dealt a bad hand by inattentive politicians.   MORE

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump issued an order Thursday keeping some of the most sensitive records from the Kennedy assassination files sealed for another 3-1/2 years, as the National Archives released a final batch under a law meant to force most of the records into the light by last fall.

In 1992, Congress set a 25-year deadline for releasing remaining documents stemming from John F. Kennedy’s murder in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

When the deadline arrived — Oct. 26 last year — Trump gave federal agencies a six-month extension to plead the case for keeping selected records sealed, if they could assert a vital national security interest. The FBI and CIA in particular had pressed for more time.

Some 15,884 records that have now been partially released, some with heavy redactions, will be subject to yet more review over the next three years under Trump’s order.

Fox News host Sean Hannity is responding to news reports that he has links to shell companies that have spent $90 million purchasing houses across the U.S., and he says he’s under “attack” for investing in struggling communities.

As WND reported, Hannity was named as a client of President Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen, last week. Hannity said his legal discussions with Cohen were focused on the issue of real estate.

“I’ve said many time on my radio show: I hate the stock market,” Hannity said on television. “Michael knows real estate.”

On Sunday, the London Guardian reported that it had reviewed thousands of pages of public records concerning Hannity’s investments.

“The records link Hannity to a group of shell companies that spent at least $90m on more than 870 homes in seven states over the past decade,” the Guardian reported. “The properties range from luxurious mansions to rentals for low-income families. Hannity is the hidden owner behind some of the shell companies and his attorney did not dispute that he owns all of them.

“Dozens of the properties were bought at a discount in 2013, after banks foreclosed on their previous owners for defaulting on mortgages. Before and after then, Hannity sharply criticized Barack Obama for the U.S. foreclosure rate.”

Every year, Americans use guns to defend themselves more than 2 million times, according to an unpublished study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that focused on data gathered in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

The findings show that use of guns for self-defense happens more frequently than criminal use of firearms.

During his Monday broadcast, talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh said “it’s typical” that the CDC didn’t go public with the eye-opening findings.

“The CDC figures this does not further the leftist agenda,” Limbaugh said, “so they keep it secret, but it has been uncovered.”

Since the 1990s, Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck and partner Marc Gertz have claimed as many as 2.2 million Americans use firearms to defend themselves every year. While critics have claimed Kleck’s estimates were too high, he has frequently stated that they provide no scientific evidence to counter his findings.

Now it’s revealed that the unpublished CDC study in the 1990s found 2.46 million defensive gun uses, or DGUs, per year.

But those on “the left” – code for a worldview of churning rebellion against the Judeo-Christian, capitalist, Constitution-honoring ways of previous generations of Americans – have their own very different notions of truth.

Of course, Americans have the cherished constitutional right to believe whatever “truth” they want, however absurd it might be. But there is a big price to pay, both as individuals and as a nation, for embracing lies as truth.

Testosterone could be good for more than men's sexual health and strong muscles and bones. 

A new study has found those with low levels of the hormone could be more likely to suffer from chronic illness.

Even the under-40s are at higher risk of obesity-related conditions like diabetes and heart disease thanks to modern sedentary lifestyles, and low testosterone means they are more likely to have more than one at once, according to the research.   

One researcher warned that all men should be worried about falling testosterone levels - which could cause 'a silent decline in overall health' - even if their level of the hormone is not low enough to have been diagnosed by a doctor.

Kaya Jones, the Defiant ex-Pussycat Doll who called the pop group a 'prostitution ring,' has detailed the sex abuse she said she went through while she was still a member of the band.   

Jones, who left the Dolls after three years in 2005, told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview she and other members of the scantily clad all-girl group were regularly abused by music industry executives.

It wasn't sex for money per se, but sexual favors were expected of the Dolls.

Washington and the US media seem to have no doubts about the Syrian government’s complicity in the Douma incident despite the fact that those who want America to stay in Syria have far more solid motives, Ron Paul told RT.

The assertion by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that Washington is “confident” that Syrian President Bashar Assad is culpable for the alleged chemical attack on the Damascus suburb of Douma does not stand up to scrutiny, Ron Paul, former congressman and founder of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, told RT.

“I don’t know what they are confident about. They are confident in telling lies and hope people will believe it,” he said.

Mainstream American media don’t seem to need facts to back the White House’s claims, either. “Most of the time when a crime is committed in this country, the stations, when they are not sure, they carefully say: ‘this is allegedly’ – but they never do this under these circumstances and they have zero bits of information,” Paul pointed out.

While there are few questions in the US media over who is to blame for the alleged incident, the former congressman argues that Assad is the last person to suspect. “I think that least likely it would be Assad,”he said, noting that the same goes for Moscow.

“I cannot see any reason why Assad would do this, there’s no reason for Russians to have done that.” Unlike Russia and Syria, the forces who want to see the US staying in Syria have a clear motive, Paul said.

A multi-millionaire who believes California should be separated into six separate states says he has gathered enough signatures to place it on the ballot in two years.

Venture capitalist Tim Draper, 55, says the Golden State is too large to govern efficiently, and that people living there would be better served by a more localised government.

The technology investor has proposed splitting the state into six: San Diego and Orange County would become South California, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara would make up West California, the Sacramento area would be known as North California, and Bakersfield, Fresno and Stockton would make up Central California.

Fasting may preserve brain health, new research suggests.

A low-fat diet that includes 40 per cent fewer calories then recommended intakes reduces inflammation in mice's brain cells, a study found today.

Such eating plans also maintain the function of brain tissue, the research adds.

Lead author Dr Bart Eggen from the University Medical Center Groningen in The Netherlands, said: 'Ageing-induced inflammatory activation of microglia could only be prevented when mice were fed a low-fat diet in combination with limited calorific intake. 

'A low-fat diet per se was not sufficient to prevent these changes.'

Microglia is a type of cell in the brain that helps to maintain the proper function of the organ's tissue.

Results further suggest cutting calories is more effective at maintaining brain health than exercise.

Brain-cell inflammation has been linked to conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Rasmussen's encephalitis, which can cause seizures and eventual dementia.

According to Department of Energy data, North Dakota is on pace to surpass California in oil production in the next few years. Mr. Hamm explains over lunch in Washington, D.C., that the more his company drills, the more oil it finds. Continental Resources has seen its “proved reserves” of oil and natural gas (mostly in North Dakota) skyrocket to 421 million barrels this summer from 118 million barrels in 2006.

“We expect our reserves and production to triple over the next five years.” And for those who think this oil find is only making Mr. Hamm rich, he notes that today in America “there are 10 million royalty owners across the country” who receive payments for the oil drilled on their land. “The wealth is being widely shared.”
