Hmiel moved to Charlotte to continue recovery

Injured race car driver Shane Hmiel was transported from Methodist Hospital to a rehabilitation center in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday, part of his long road to recovery.

Hmiel, 30, crashed in qualifying for a U.S. Auto Club Silver Crown race Oct. 9 at the Terre Haute Action Track. He has had a half-dozen surgeries on his neck, back and an artery, but now is stable enough to be transported.

Parker Williams, a friend of Hmiel who is serving as the family spokesman, said Thursday that no additional surgeries are expected.

"There's good movement in his arms, he's able to mouth words and he has passed the swallow test, so he can drink water," Williams said. "It's minimal, but it's very encouraging. He's progressing well."  MORE
