Stunning analysis sees Israeli real estate as roadmap to future events

Was the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem more than a place of worship? Was it, in addition, a roadmap to future events – a kind of prophetic landmark whose significance is only now revealed through the development of satellite imagery?

What the media will never tell you about Israel, Islam

 

In 1998, Christianity Today magazine ran a cover story about evangelical support for Israel. It was the usual hatchet job from a center-left publication that many evangelicals still believe is the flagship periodical for the American church.

The cover image was a montage of Bible prophecy teachers – in caricature – led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Behind him were the usual suspects CT likes to round up when mocking Bible prophecy/dispensationalism: Jerry Falwell, Tim LaHaye and … Hal Lindsey.

It is doubtful that CT's editors would consider a similar cover story on, say, Jim Wallis, Brian McLaren and Tony Campolo. To CT, those are "careful thinkers" who struggle to lead the ignorant masses to enlightenment.

In any event, I thought at the time that Lindsey's presence on the cover was quite interesting, since he has been a lightning rod of late for mockery of prophecy teaching.

And yet, the guy is perhaps the father of the modern prophecy movement, and his teachings have led millions to truth. Even better for us, he's still very active and seems to shake off criticism with a rare combination of good humor and Matthau-esque disdain.

Nearly all of Franklin’s printing and writing was undertaken for profit, but in the two months before his retirement in 1748, he devoted his press to a political cause: pressuring the Quaker-dominated Assembly to establish a militia for defense against marauding attacks by the French. Franklin employed all the skills he had learned as a writer and printer to promote self-defense, including broadsides, blank forms, lottery tickets, and pamphlets. He thus initiated a media campaign that brought together speech (meetings and sermons), printing, and manuscript (the signing of forms, petitions, and lottery tickets, as well as the writing of speeches and pamphlets.

The laboured and long-continued Endeavours [to make] Provisions for the Security of the Province having proved abortive, I determined to try what might be done by a voluntary Association of the People. To promote this I first wrote and published a Pamphlet, entitled, PLAIN TRUTH, in which I stated our defenseless Situation in strong Lights, with the Necessity of Union and Discipline for our Defense, and promis’d to propose in a few Days an Association to be generally signed for that purpose. WND sues Esquire for faked report

WASHINGTON – WND is filing a lawsuit in the nation's capital today seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages for a faked "report" in Esquire magazine that falsely said a New York Times best-selling book, "Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case That Barack Obama Is Not Eligible To Be President," by Jerome Corsi, Ph.D., had been pulled from store shelves by the publisher.

The claim has been filed by attorney Larry Klayman for Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND,  on behalf of the company, WND Books, himself and author Corsi.

Defendants named include Esquire Magazine Inc., parent company the Hearst Corp., and Mark Warren, the author of the false article.

"You can't just make up words and put them in people's mouths, deliberately misleading the public, deliberately defaming others and deliberately lying to inhibit commerce," Farah said. "Media institutions such as Esquire magazine and its parent, the Hearst Corporation, for which I was employed for nearly a decade, should know better. And they will as a result of this lawsuit."

Ayn Rand, novelist and conservative political thinker, has an impassioned following among some of today’s Republicans. They embrace her defense of laissez-faire capitalism and individualism. In many respects, she is the godmother of all libertarians. What some put aside, however, is the inconvenient fact that she was also an outspoken atheist.

A group of left-leaning Christians have decided to make an issue of this disconnect, putting some leading Republicans on the spot about the woman they think of as an intellectual hero.

A new political ad, created by the faith-based advocacy group American Values Network and provocatively titled “Ayn Rand & GOP vs. Jesus,” attempts to drive a wedge into the Republican coalition by drawing attention to Rand’s anti-religious rhetoric. The ad is is directed primarily at Rep. Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican whose budget plan was championed by Republicans and decried as overly austere by Democrats.

And while observers say that efforts to use the admiration that Ryan and others have expressed for Rand to sow discontent in the party’s conservative Christian base will gain little traction, there are some signs that Democratic groups like AVN are not the only religious Christians focusing on Rand.

“Make no mistake: I have no love for big government. But there are far better ways to critique it than Rand’s kind of godless nonsense, especially for Christians,” said Chuck Colson, the prominent evangelical and former Nixon aide and Watergate accomplice, in a video posted online a week before the appearance of the anti-Ryan ad. “One thing is for certain: Though surely unintended, today’s followers of Objectivism” — Rand’s philosophy — “are undermining the gospel. Beware!”

Hilmarton, England (CNN) - A little English village church has just made a remarkable discovery.

The ornate old Bible that had been sitting in plain view on a table near the last row of pews for longer than anyone could remember is an original King James Bible - one of perhaps 200 surviving 400-year-old original editions of arguably the most important book ever printed in English.

Despite numerous problems including actors being injured and delays in its official opening, the Broadway production of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," is getting nothing but the highest praise from media giant Glenn Beck who believes the show will be a massive moneymaker for at least the next 20 years.

"Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" is still in its preview phase on Broadway. Its official opening is scheduled for Feb. 7.

 

"Give a kidney to go see 'Spider-Man,'" Beck said today, after having seen a preview performance Saturday. "This is, by far, the best show I've ever seen. When people ask, 'Was it worth the price of the ticket?' Let me answer it this way. This show is not only worth the price of a ticket here on Broadway, which is pricey, it is worth the price of an airline ticket from Los Angeles or Hawaii to come to New York to see it. It is unlike anything I've ever seen. The storyline is fantastic."

The $50 million production has been receiving some less-than-glowing reviews from critics in the Big Apple who have described it as a "work in progress," but Beck thinks that may have to do with a "snotty" attitude among the artsy elite, who frown upon the comic-book story being brought to stage and music by Bono and the Edge, the singer and lead guitarist for the Irish rock band U2.

"Here's my problem with it," Beck said. "They spent $50 million. It will have to be sold out, every ticket, for two years to break even. My problem with this is I didn't invest. It will run for two decades. ... The only thing that will stop this is the federal government saying it's too risky. I said to my wife when they jumped off the stage and they were fighting, 'Good God, what does the insurance cost? Who is insuring this thing?' And then I realized we own AIG! We are!"

King James Bible's 400-year reign

Its cadence is found in the speeches of Abraham Lincoln and the lyrics of Paul Simon. Renowned narrator Alexander Scourby and country music legend Johnny Cash have recorded spoken versions of the text. It's estimated that 1 billion copies have been printed since the first volume rolled off the press in 1611.

The King James Version of the Bible, also known as the "Authorized Version," marks its 400th anniversary in 2011, and by any measure, it has had a lasting impact on the world and on the language into which it was sent. The "authorized" moniker comes from a title-page declaration that this Bible was "authorized to be read in churches."

"The sheer poetry of the King James Version, not to mention its almost half-millennium of absolute authority, militates against its slipping into obscurity any time soon," declared Phyllis Tickle, longtime religion editor at Publishers Weekly magazine.

Even noted atheist Richard Dawkins has praise for the volume: "You can't appreciate English literature unless you are to some extent steeped in the King James Bible. There are phrases that come from it — people don't realize they come from it — proverbial phrases, phrases that make echoes in people's minds," he said in a video released by the King James Bible Trust, the British organization that is one promoter of the 400th-anniversary celebrations due next year.

"Not to know the King James Bible is to be, in some small way, barbarian," Mr. Dawkins added.

Indeed, many of its phrases have entered everyday use, among them: "my brother's keeper," "salt of the earth," "give up the ghost," "scapegoats," "an eye for an eye," "casting your pearls before swine," "scarlet woman," "writing on the wall" and "the blind leading the blind."

"A house divided against itself," Lincoln's signature sentiment, was translated that way 250 years before Lincoln was elected president.

Geof Morin, communications director for the American Bible Society, whose New York headquarters will host a King James Bible exhibit next year, called the King James "still relevant" in the age of Twitter and Facebook.

"It was the Bible staring Thomas Jefferson in the face," Mr. Morin said. Its words, he added, were "in the speeches of Abraham Lincoln. It's the language we still use today. It's part of the American psyche, of how we see ourselves as a nation."

But before the KJV — as the version is known by many readers and scholars — came into America's consciousness, it had to arrive on the scene at all. That happened following a contentious 1604 meeting at Hampton Court palace, when a young James VI of Scotland, newly crowned as James I of England, was trying to iron out differences between the Church of England and a dissident sect known as the Puritans.

Michael Savage has a "manifesto for saving America," and it will come as no surprise to his millions of faithful radio listeners that it offers prescriptions that aren't found in the House Republicans' "Pledge to America."

Savage's 37-point plan – "Trickle Up Poverty: Stopping Obama's Attack on Our Borders, Economy and Security" by HarperCollins – hits bookstores today with a call to "run the country like a business, not an empire; close the borders; institute a flat tax; use profiling to prevent terror attacks; and privatize the regulation of Wall Street;" among others.

"The more conservative points were left out of the Republican plan for America," he told WND in an interview. "They have no specifics about cutting back on government spending. They have no specifics on stopping the flow of illegal aliens."

While some tea party leaders have deemphasized or set aside abortion and other social issues, Savage tackles them head on, calling for a ban on the deadly procedure, with the exception of the physical survival of the mother as determined by two licensed doctors.

He also wants to see Norplant, the embedded contraceptive, required for all women on welfare.

"That's a revolutionary statement," he admitted. "But should we permit women on welfare to keep knocking out babies to increase their benefits? Only an insane society would permit that."

Savage doesn't apologize that the book is "quite radical" in some respects.

"I don't claim to be middle of the road, nor do I claim to be Mr. Milquetoast," he said.

Was Jack the Ripper a woman?

The notorious serial killer who stalked London’s East End, butchering prostitutes and terrorising the population, may not have been Jack the Ripper – but Jill.

An Australian scientist has used swabs from letters supposedly sent to police by the Ripper to build a partial DNA profile of the killer. The results suggest that the person who murdered and mutilated at least five women from 1888 onwards may have been a woman.

Ian Findlay, a professor of molecular and forensic diagnostics, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he had developed a profiling technique that could extract DNA from a single cell or strand of hair up to 160 years old. Conventional DNA sampling methods require at least 200 cells.

Dr Findlay, who is based in Brisbane, travelled to London, where the evidence from the still-unsolved murders is stored at the National Archive. The material, which was kept by Scotland Yard until 1961, includes letters sent to police at the time, some of them signed “Jack the Ripper”. Most are believed to be fakes, but a handful are thought to have been written by the killer.

Dr Findlay took swabs from the back of stamps and from the gum used to seal envelopes, and possible bloodstains. He took his haul back to Brisbane, where – concentrating on swabs from the so-called “Openshaw letter”, the one believed most likely to be genuine – he extracted the DNA and then amplified the information to create a profile. The resultswere “inconclusive” and not forensically reliable, but he did construct a partial profile and based on this analysis, he said, “it’s possible the Ripper could be female”.

The victims were all prostitutes, murdered and mutilated in the foggy alleyways of Whitechapel. By the surgical nature of the wounds, the killer was assumed to have some surgical knowledge.

The chief suspects, who included a barrister, a Polish boot-maker and a Russian confidence trickster, were all men. But Frederick Abberline, the detective who led the investigation, thought it possible the killer was a woman. This was because the fifth victim, Mary Kelly, was “seen” by witnesses hours after she was killed. Abberline thought this was the murderer running away, in Kelly’s clothes.

The only female suspect was Mary Pearcey, who was convicted of murdering her lover’s wife, Phoebe Hogg, in 1890 and hanged. She apparently employed a similar modus operandi to the Ripper.

Yes, even the book is a fake!

Yesterday, I received an e-mail from a Boston-area writer and composer, Jay Spencer, who suggested some other parallels between Obama's "Dreams" and Ayers' books that had evaded me. They smack even the casual reader in the face.

Remember that the young Ayers served as a merchant seaman, and although he has tried to put his ocean-going days behind him, the language of the sea will not let him go.

"I realized that no one else could ever know this singular experience," Ayers writes of his maritime adventures. Yet curiously, much of this same nautical language flows through Obama's earth-bound memoir.

Although there are no literal sea experiences in "Dreams," the following words, incredibly enough, appear in both "Dreams" and in Ayers' work: fog, mist, ships, seas, boats, oceans, calms, captains, charts, first mates, storms, streams, wind, waves, barges, horizons, ports, panoramas, moorings, tides, currents, and things howling, fluttering, knotted, ragged, tangled and murky.

This is well beyond coincidence. By contrast, only the words "current" and "tide" appear in my own semi-memoir on race, "Sucker Punch."
